Professional Interest/Expertise/Specializations:
I am intrigued by the multiple functions of the imidazole-containing peptide derivatives, such as carcinine. I am particularly interested by their aldehyde-quenching effect since it can mimic the detoxification role of the photoreceptor inner segment RDHs. I have made the observation that carcinine can reach high levels in the retina after topical administration through eye drops. This, combined with the strong neuroprotective effect of carcinine, offers therapeutic potentials for progressive retinopathies that involve oxidative damage in their pathogenesis.

Research Projects:

Oklahoma Health Research Program, OCAST. "Therapeutic use of carcinine in progressive retinopathy."
Identification of Membrane Receptor(s) for CAP37 and CAP37-derived Chemotactic Peptides. (COP seed grant)
