Professional Interest/Expertise/Specializations:
The focus of our lab is to study and characterize the collectin proteins Surfactant Proteins A and D in retinal biology. This is especially important in the context of retinal inflammation in the developing infant. These proteins appear to impact the developmental appearance of retinal blood vessels and thus influence retinal neovascularization seen in preterm infants. Our approach to this problem has been from both the basic science and clinical research side. From the molecular perspective, we are using mouse models of retinal inflammation and oxygen induced retinopathy to understand the pathways in retinal growth and blood vessel development during systemic and local retinal inflammation. From a translational aspect we are studying the genetic variation in surfactant proteins A and D in preterm babies with retinopathy of prematurity. Using this clinical-translational approach we hope to gain a better understanding of the various risk factors in the development of ROP, as currently the best therapies we currently offer, leave babies visually impaired for life.
