Professional Interest/Expertise/Specializations:
Using cutting-edge technologies and our body's natural host defense mechanisms, research is focused on designing and developing futuristic "individualized therapies" for the prevention and treatment of infectious and inflammatory diseases. We are learning that dendritic (immune) cells and pathogen-sensing SP-A and TLR4 molecules are critical for protection. These cells and molecules have qualitative or quantitative defects in individuals who are extremely susceptible to infection, either by developmental immaturity or by immune-compromised conditions.

Research Projects:

Immune functions of dendritic cells, toll-like receptor (TLR) and collectins in preterm baboon lung (PHF)
Role of dendritic cells and pathogen-pattern recognition receptors in premature baboon lung.
Evaluation of SPA4 Peptide containing Curosurf in Mouse Models of Lung Infection and Inflammation (Grant approved by Cornerstone Therapeutics.)
Control of Lung Inflammation by a TLR-interacting SP-A-derived Peptide (NIH-NIGMS COBRE)
Immunomodulation by a TLR-4-interacting Surfactant Protein-A Peptide (OU Growth fund)
