Professional Interest/Expertise/Specializations:
Dr. Tierney's clinical/research interests are: Colon Cancer Screening, Endoscopic Ultrasound, Pancreatic Diseases and Biliary Diseases. His clinical focus is pancreatic, esophageal and colon cancer. His research interests have included examining the impact of pancreatic cancer staging strategies on patient outcomes and the processes of care in colorectal cancer screening. Dr. Tierney currently serves as Site Investigator for a VA Cooperative Study, Colonoscopy vs. Fecal Immunochemical Test in Reducing Mortality from Colorectal Cancer, a comparative effectiveness study of the screening colonoscopy for colorectal cancer or the annual stool testing with a Fecal Immunochemical Test. He is also currently involved in research projects on the role of stem cells in patients suspected of pancreatic and esophageal cancer. Dr. Tierney has grant funding through a number of organizations and has an excellent publication record. He has published research in the journal; Cell, Journal of Biological Chemistry, American Journal of Gastroenterology, and in Gastrointestinal Endoscopy. Collectively Dr. Tierney has published greater than 100 manuscripts and abstracts, many of which have resulted in video, poster and oral presentations at national meetings. Many of his publications have been completed with junior faculty and fellows reflecting his commitment to serving as a research mentor, opening their minds to clinical research and propelling their academic careers. Nationally, he has served as a councilor on the governing board of the American Society of Gastrointestinal Endoscopy (ASGE) and has been a member and/or chaired a number of ASGE committees which has resulted in a large number of publications defining practice guidelines and use of endoscopic technology for patient care.
