Professional Interest/Expertise/Specializations:
Two diverse interest areas of research: auditory physiology and cardiovascular physiology have been applied using magnetic targeted therapy of nanoparticles containing therapeutic payloads. These applications of physiology are sought to be translated into the clinic. Previously, auditory studies in collaboration with the Hough Ear Institute, Oklahoma City, which I co-founded with Jack Hough, MD and where I served in research and administrative roles during that collaboration, we co-developed portions of the cochlear implant, the Audiant Bone Conductor and the SOUNDTEC middle ear implantable device. All three devices were approved by the FDA for use in patients. Most recently, our collaboration led to the delivery of therapeutics to the inner ear (cochlea) using magnetic nanoparticles, pulled across the round window membrane in efforts to prevent hearing loss (deafness) from noise or toxin-induced cochlear injury. These efforts led to the formation of SOUNDTEC Inc., of Oklahoma City, through which the device was marketed. Previously, Dormer had co-founded NanoBioMagnetics Inc. in Edmond, OK. Most recently, Dormer co-founded NanoMed Targeting Systems Inc., Oklahoma City, in collaboration with an Israeli electromagnetics company. Cardiac studies previously focused on the neural control of the cardiovascular system, emanating from the medulla of the brain. Using dog models, we described this cardiovascular control region essential for life and involved in disease states such as hypertension. Presently, in collaboration with the Heart Rhythm Institute, Division of Cardiology, Department of Medicine, we are collaborating on targeting the integrative ganglionated plexi (GP) of the intrinsic cardiac nervous system. We are targeting magnetic nanoparticles that convey a therapeutic payload to GP only (targeted therapy) for the prevention of atrial fibrillation, the most common cardiac arrhythmia in the world.
